40th Anniversary Celebrations

The Institute of Transport Studies invites you to three events celebrating the 40th anniversary of transport research and education at Monash University.

The 2009 Ogden Transport Lecture

Lecture Topic: Towards two billion cars - Transforming cars, fuel and mobility

Presented by: Professor Dan Sperling, University of California

Date: Thursday 20 August, 2009
Time: 6 - 7 pm
Venue: State Library of Victoria, Melbourne

Abstract: The number of motor vehicles in the world is projected to reach two billion by 2030. While the car offers individuals many mobility benefits, our cities and the planet are struggling under the strain of accommodating the increasing number of vehicles. To create a more sustainable transport future we need to change the gas guzzling car monoculture that all too often defines our current urban transport systems. An integrated package of measures potentially holds the key to addressing these challenges. This lecture examines how our transport monoculture can evolve through using technology to improve fuel economy, replacing the internal combustion engine and providing enhanced personal mobility options.

Speaker Bio: Dan Sperling is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and a Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at University of California, Davis. He is the Founding Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies and Acting Director of the Energy Efficiency Center. Professor Sperling is recognized as a leading international expert on transportation technology assessment, energy and environmental aspects of transportation, and transportation and climate policy. Governor Schwarzenegger recently appointed Professor Sperling to the “automotive” seat on the California Air Resources Board. In the past 25 years, he has authored or co-authored over 200 technical papers and 11 books. Professor Sperling is chair of the (Davos) World Economic Forum council on “Future of Mobility” and a recent member of 12 US National Academies committees on Transportation and Climate Policy, Energy Efficiency, Gasoline Taxes, Hydrogen, Transport in China, Biomass Fuels R&D, and others. He was founding chair of standing committees for the U.S. Transportation Research Board on Alternative Transportation Fuels (1989-96), and Sustainability and Transportation (2006-08).
