Welcome

To those of you who are new to the Civil Engineering Department, Welcome! The Head, staff and higher year students of the Department hope that you will feel at home with us and think of yourself as a member of a group.

The Department of Civil Engineering has about 350 undergraduate students. There are 19 academic and 20 general staff.

It has offices on the Clayton Campus on the first floor of Building 60, while the laboratories are in the south-eastern part of Building 37, on both levels. Level rooms are available in Building 72 (Levels 2 and 3) and Building 60 (Level 4).

In pursuing its ultimate goal of raising the standard of civil engineering practice, particularly in Victoria, the Department strives for excellence in both teaching and research. It is teaching that concerns us in this booklet. One of our goals in teaching is to develop a close relationship between staff and students. Both staff and students share the task of developing your civil engineering competence, and we believe this can best be done by constant interaction between the staff and the students.

Again, welcome to the Department! I hope that you and the staff will enjoy three years of mutual endeavour towards common goals and that you will quickly become, in a full sense, a member of the department.
