Prizes and Scholarships

Arup Prize for Civil Engineering

A prize of $1000 to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of Department to the top graduate in that Department.

Australian Steel Institute Prize

An annual prize of $200 to be awarded to the student who demonstrates the greatest proficiency in the field of steel structures, provided that the candidates work is of sufficient merit.

Civil Contractors Federation Prize

A cash prize of $1,000 to be awarded annually to the best student in the subject CIV3203 Civil Engineering Construction. The award is based on a combination of the best report submitted by a student describing his or her experience during a period of industry placement taken as part of the course and performance in the final examination.

Department of Civil Engineering Vacation Work Prize

A prize of $100 to be awarded annually to the student in the Department of Civil Engineering who submits the best report on vacation work experience.

Douglas Partners Prize

A prize of $500 awarded to the best student at third year level in geomehanics units CIV3247 and CIV3248.

GHD Highway Design Prize

A prize of $250 to be awarded annually to the student in the Department of Civil Engineering who is judged to have submitted the best Highway Design

Esso Engineering Prizes

Two prizes each valued at $500 awarded annually to:

  • the third year civil engineering student achieving the best performance in CIV3204 (Engineering Investigation)
  • the third year civil engineering student achieving the best performance in CIV3204 (Project Management for Civil Engineers)

Foundation Industry Prize for Soil Engineering

An annual prize of $500 donated jointly by Frankipile Australia Pty Ltd and Wagstaff Piling Pty Ltd and awarded to the best foundation design team in CIV4249 Soil Engineering.

Fred Green Memorial Prize in Civil Engineering

A prize of $200 donated by the Institution of Civil Engineers to be awarded annually to the student in the Department of Civil Engineering who shows the greatest proficiency in civil engineering (completing all core units) to the end of Level Three.

GHD Prize in Water Engineering

A prize of $250 to be awarded annually to the student in the Department of Civil Engineering who has shown the greatest proficiency in water engineering in Level Four.

Neville Smith Timber Industry Prize

A prize of $300 donated by Neville Smith Timber Industries Pty Ltd awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of Department to the undergraduate student who shows the greatest proficiency in the field of timber structures.

Orica Prize for Engineering

A prize of $2000 and a certificate will be awarded annually to a student who has completed level 3 engineering in any of the four-year single degree or longer double degree courses in the Faculty of Engineering. The award is intended to promote academic excellence and also recognise breadth in well-balanced, all-round achievement. Heads of departments and schools in the faculty will send to the dean a list of nominated students with outstanding performance in level 3 at the end of each academic year. A panel, comprising two representatives from Orica Australia and the dean will interview those nominated to select the prize winner.

Railand Prize in Urban Water Systems

A prize of $500 to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the Department to the student in civil engineering who gains the highest mark in the unit CIV3264 (Urban Water and Wastewater Systems). The prize is awarded only if there is a student of sufficient merit. The prize may be shared.

Railand Prize in Water Supply

A prize of $250 to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the student who gains the highest mark in the unit CIV2261 (Water Supply 1).

Richardson Prize in Transport Engineering

A prize of $200 donated by Dr. A.J. Richardson to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering to the student who has the greatest proficiency in one transport elective and project.

SRIA Prize for Concrete Structures

A prize of $500 and a framed certificate donated by the Steel Reinforcement Institute of Australia to a student who demonstrates an outstanding achievement in reinforced concrete design at the undergraduate level.

Thiess Prize for Civil Engineering Design

A prize of $500 to the group judged to have submitted the best design in the unit CIV4212 (Civil Engineering Practice 4).

Traffix Group Traffic Engineering Prize

A prize of $500 donated by the Traffix Group to be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Head of Department of Civil Engineering to the final year student who has shown the greatest proficiency in transport engineering.

Scholarships

Transurban Excellence in Engineering Award

This award is provided by Transurban City Link Ltd and will awarded to an outstanding Civil, Electrical and Computer Systems or Environmental student completing the third year of study. The award value is $5,000 AUD to assist in final year education expenses in the Monash University Faculty of Engineering. The award will be open to engineering students who are permanent residents of Australia. Nominees for the award will be recommended by the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering and the Coordinator or the Environmental Engineering Program. Each discipline area may make one nomination.

The Traffix Group Scholarships

Two scholarships have been established for students who have an interest and intend to pursue careers in transport engineering. The scholarships are offered to students who will complete level 2 or 3 of their studies at the end of the year of application. The level 2 scholarship offers $1,000 plus work experience with the Traffix Group for 6 to 12 weeks. The level 3 scholarship offers $1,500 plus work experience with the Traffix Group for 6 to 12 weeks. Students gaining the level 3 scholarship will be required to undertake a transport project in level 4. Students applying for the scholarships should submit a two page outline of their interest in transport and the reasons they would like to work in this area, their transcript and a short CV to the Head of the Institute of Transport Studies (Monash) by 30 July each year. Appropriate students will be interviewed in August and the scholarships granted in September.

Keith Rix Scholarship

Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd have set up a scholarship to commemorate the contribution to engineering of Keith Rix, their longest serving employee. The scholarship, worth $5,000 is to assist with the education expenses for a final year civil engineering student. The award recipient will be offered vacation employment with Leighton Contractors at the end of level 3. The award recipient must display high level academic performance in the first two and a half years of their undergraduate program. In addition, the successful student must be a permanent resident of Australia and concurrently hold another major scholarship or award. Scholarship applicants should show that the scholarship will assist them in completing the final year of their program.
