  1. That they have acquired a basic knowledge across the full spectrum of Civil Engineering, building from fundamental science and mathematics, through applications and design and including management methods.
  2. That they have an understanding in these areas to enable them to conceive quality, innovative and cost-effective solutions to civil engineering problems.
  3. That they have skills in computing, oral and written presentation, research method and organisation to enable them to function efficiently in a professional engineering environment.
  4. That they have an understanding of and commitment to professional and environmental responsibility, the legal and moral duties of an engineer in the community and a continuing intellectual curiosity.
  5. To provide students with an overall training that makes them eligible for graduate membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

At the completion of a Bachelor Degree, or double degree, in Civil Engineering, a student should have acquired:

  1. A sound knowledge and understanding of:
    • basic mathematics and science, and scientific method
    • applied sciences, such as solid and fluid mechanics and properties of materials
    • techniques of measurement and experimentation
    • the engineering design process and the engineering approach to problem solution
    • ethical standards and legal responsibilities
    • the principles of management of human, material and financial resources for engineering purposes

  2. Technical skills in:
    • the application of knowledge to the analysis and design of civil engineering tasks across the field of structural and geotechnical engineering, water engineering and transportation.

  3. Professional skills in the area of:
    • technical presentation, both oral and written
    • team working, including team leadership
    • logical and methodical evaluation
    • computer applications
    • time and resource management

  4. Appropriate attitudes in relation to:
    • the community responsibilities of an engineer and community consultation
