About Civil Engineering

Civil engineering and civilisation are closely related; in many ways the history of civilisation through the ages is the history of civil engineering.

The modern world could not exist without the contributions made by civil engineers: industrial and commercial buildings, transport systems, water supply and irrigation networks, sewage and waste treatment facilities, and energy and communication networks all depend on the work of the civil engineer.

In planning, designing, constructing and operating these facilities civil engineers use their ingenuity to find solutions which make good use of limited natural resources, preserve or enhance environmental values and contribute to the welfare of the community for a sustainable future.

A Choice of Fields to Work In

Using their broadly-based education, Monash University civil engineering graduates have an excellent background for making important contributions to a wide range of activities, so they can be found in almost any area of industry and commerce. The most common areas of employment include:

  • structural engineering, including design and analysis
  • building and construction
  • environmental engineering, which includes sustainable engineering development, waste and wastewater engineering
  • water resource and hydraulic engineering
  • highway and traffic engineering
  • mining and resource development
  • geotechnical engineering
  • technical computing services
  • research and teaching in civil engineering and related fields
  • management in any of the above fields

This diverse range of potential working fields offers civil engineering graduates broad employment opportunities and a choice of satisfying career paths.
