| 2002 Civil Engineering Alumnus of the Year, Richard Cugley |
Richard Cugley graduated from Monash University Clayton Campus in 1972. He was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering Degree with First Class Honours and topped his year. He also received the James Hardie award for outstanding performance in his final year. Richard returned to Monash in 1978 and was one of the first students to enrol for a Master of Engineering Science Degree. This involved part time study as well as full time work and was awarded in 1981. His 'minor" thesis was a theoretical analysis of the stability of unsupported cantilevering steel piles during driving". The investigations resulted in practical recommendations for the safe driving of such piles and were published in various local and international journals. Following graduation Richard joined Clive Steele Consultants, Consulting Engineers in Melbourne specialising in the structural design of buildings and industrial structures.
In 1979 he joined Hardcastle & Richards, and in 1982 relocated to Sydney to establish an office for Hardcastle & Richards. In late 1999 Richard joined Maunsell Australia as an Industry Director for Mining and Industrial projects. He was given the responsibility for managing Maunsell's office in Melbourne in 2002 and in 2002 was appointed Director, Southern Region, having responsibility for their offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide.
These offices provide civil and structural as well as environmental and planning consulting services.
