Unbound granular pavement moisture response due to climatic influences
Supervisor

It is well-known that the climate influences the performance of unbound granular pavements. The Australian road network comprises everything from heavy duty pavements to cleared tracks. Approximately 85% of the sealed Australian road network is made up of unbound granular pavements with thin bituminous surfacings. This research is focused upon this type of pavement.
Currently, the specification and design of unbound pavements is empirically based and does not adequately account for environmental effects. The moisture condition has a significant impact upon the behaviour of unbound materials.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the CSIRO conducted research into prediction models into the soil moisture regime. Since then, there has been less emphasis on this issue. With the advent of geoenviornmental engineering in the last two decades or so, this area has been revived and significant advances in understanding, experimental techniques and modelling have been made. Through the advancement in computing power, significant advances have also been made in unsaturated soil modelling.
This research project seeks to use and build upon previous research and apply this knowledge to pavement engineering. The project scope will be primarily on the effects on the moisture and temperature fluctuations on the pavement system. The outcomes of this project will be an important input to a rational pavement design methodology for unbound pavements.
