Research:

The effect of CO2 sequestration on mechanical and flow properties of Victorian brown coal:

In recent years Australia has become the highest emitter of green house gases to the atmosphere in the world as a result of ongoing process as coal power plant, petroleum and oil recovery. Therefore numerous research have been conducted on this aspect and the CO2 sequestration in deep coal seams has been identified as the most economical and environmental attractive method. Because in spite of the fact that this process can be used to reduce the atmospheric CO2 level to a great extend, it can be used to produce a value-added product as methane (CH4). On other hand Victoria has the one of the large coal basin in world and hence the CO2 sequestration can be successfully applied to Australia. Normally natural coal beds locate at very deep positions (800-1000m below the ground level) and pressure and the temperature in these locations are higher than the critical values and gases available at its supercritical states. However only few study can be found related to study of mechanical and flow behaviour of coal under the super critical CO2 sequestration. Especially for the Victorian brown coal, it is hard to find a detail study on this. The main outcomes from this project will be a better understanding of the ability of coal seams to sequester economically-viable amounts of CO2, and of the potential for adverse effects from the impact of supercritical CO2 on the mechanical properties.
