PhD Research Topic
Unsaturated Behaviour of Nonwoven Geotextiles.
Date Commenced: January, 2005.
Supervisors: A/Prof Malek Bouazza and A/Prof Jayantha Kodikara.
Geotextiles are becoming more commonly incorporated in earth structures where unsaturated flow theory will dominate. Most current design methods of geotextiles are based upon assumptions of saturated conditions; yet, geotextiles are installed in earthen systems where unsaturated moisture flow is predominant. This is mainly due to the fact that geotextiles are used for their useful practical applications, but with lack of understanding of their unsaturated behaviour. The aim is to provide theoretical insight, experimental testing and numerical simulation for the water flow through nonwoven geotextiles. Methods will be developed for experimentally measuring the unsaturated hydraulic parameters of nonwoven geotextiles and numerical simulation process will be implemented to optimize the observed retention data. The study will involve proposing the implementation of the findings as methodologies for reliable assessment of unsaturated nonwoven geotextiles for better practice of designing of these geosynthetics tools in geostructures field applications.
Research Interests
- Characterisation of hydraulic properties of geotextiles.
- Experimentation and modelling of unsaturated behaviour of geotextiles.
- Desiccation cracking of clay soils.
