Short Resume:

Dr. Bouazza is an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering and is currently the Deputy Head of the Department. He was the Head of the Geomechanics Group from 2001 to 2008. He is an Adjunct Research Professor at Cardiff University, Geoenvironmental Research Centre. He received his diploma (Ingenieur d'Etat) in Civil Engineering from the Ecole Nationale Polytechnique d'Alger, (Algeria) in 1984, and his PhD from the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom ) in 1990. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia. Prior to joining Monash University in 1996, Dr. Bouazza held academical positions at the University of Houari Boumediene, Algiers, (Algeria) and the University of Ghent (Belgium ).

Dr. Bouazza's research interests are on the design of waste containment facilities (with emphasis on barrier and cover systems, and waste geotechnical properties), Contaminant Transport in Porous Media, Thermo-Hydro-mechanical behaviour of porous media, Unsaturated behaviour of geomaterials, Ground Improvement, Geosynthetics, Geophysics and Geotechnical Properties of Soft Soils.

Dr. Bouazza is very prominent in technical and professional society activities and serves on a number of international technical committees. Currently, he is a member of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) council and Vice-President of the Australasian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (ACIGS). He is a core member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee No5 (TC5) on Environmental Geotechnics, Chair of the International Geosynthetics Society Asian Activity Committee and co-chair of the Education Committee and a member of the Standard Australia committee C20 on geosynthetics. He is editorial board member of Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering , Geosynthetics International , Geotextiles & Geomembranes , Journal of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering and the International Journal of Lowland Technology and very active as a reviewer for several international journals.

Dr. Bouazza is the author of more than 180 publications in refereed journals and international and national conferences, and the editor of two books and two journal special issues. His skills and experience in the area of waste containment facilities, geosynthetics and soil remediation/improvement are well recognized in Australia and abroad. He has been invited to deliver and contribute to several keynote lectures and state of the art reports in international conferences in Australia, USA, Korea, Japan and Europe, and delivers short courses on liners and cover systems for waste containment facilities on a regular basis locally and internationally. In addition to his academic commitments, Dr. Bouazza gives specialist advice for the industry both nationally and internationally.
