The Department

Prof. Xiao-Ling Zhao

The Department of Civil Engineering at Monash was formed in 1961. It has a long and productive history in providing quality education and research outputs in the areas of geomechanics, structures, transport, and water and environmental engineering.

The Department has over 40 Academic/Research Staff, 20 Administrative/Technical Staff, 19 Associates and 80 Postgraduate Students. It has association with the Institute of Transport Studies (ITS), Institute of Sustainable Water Resources (ISWR), Facility of Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB), Cooperative Research Centre eWater and Management and Prediction of Pipe Bursts (MAPPS). The Department honours one distinguished alumnus each year through the Alumnus of the Year award. It also sponsors several international visitors to the department every year to conduct joint research.

The Department offers several undergraduate degrees. It also offers postgraduate coursework degrees via Off-Campus Learning. The Department actively pursues innovative and significant multi-disciplinary research to address the challenges for engineering in the 21st century.
